As Seen on Masterpiece Theatre
It is the first century A.D. and the Romans have invaded ancient Britain, but the Iceni, a Celtic tribe, are unwilling to live as a subject race in their own land. For a while, they are allowed to continue their lives as usual, without Rome's interference, but when Emperor Claudius dies, the Romans and the new Emperor Nero no longer tolerate the Iceni way of life and endeavor to crush the upstart Queen Boudicca (Alex Kingston - ER, Moll Flanders) and her tribe. However, they have underestimated the Celtic spirit and, seeking revenge, Boudicca lead! s her people against the mighty Romans with devastating effect.

A MASTERPIECE THEATRE PRESENTATION and AWARD WINNING DRAMA
Notorious. Scandalous. Unforgettable!
She is a lover, a criminal and a master of disguise who lives life on her own lusty terms. Acclaimed actress Alex Kingston ("Dr. Elizabeth Corday" of television's ER) stars as Daniel Defoe's notorious heroine in this scandalous romp set in the 18th Century!
Ever since her birth in Newgate Prison, Moll has survived by her cunning, wit and considerable powers of seduction. She goes through five husbands and countless lovers to escape a life on the streets. In between using and deceiving her besotted paramours, she is not above picking a pocket or two! All the while, though, her heart belongs to the charismatic Jemmy (Daniel Craig). Inevitably, even the most clever criminal's luck runs out and Moll is soon facing the hangma! n's noose. As her execution day approaches, she devises one last desperate ploy to save not only her own neck, but also the life of her one true love.
"Brilliant Fun!" --What's On TV (U.K.)
Ex-cons Ellie, Hannah, Shoo, and Josie have done their time. Now they just want to disappear to Barbados with £3 million stolen from Ellieâs gangster husband, Roy. When a twist of fate leaves them without passports, they flee to a remote village in the Scottish Highlands and a shabby hotel that seems like the perfect hideaway. All they have to do is lie low and plan their escape. But the town of Hope Springs harbors bigger secrets and worse crimes, including unsolved murders. Soon their lives are complicated by small-town nosiness, a shady solicitor, a handsome policeman, and a hit man sent by Roy in search of his money--and the girls.
Alex Kingston (ER, Moll Flanders) leads a colorful cast that includes Annette Crosbie (Little Dorrit), Sian Reeves (Emmerdale Farm), Paul Higgins (In the L! oop), Christine Bottomley (The Street), Vinette Robinson (Waterloo Road), Ronni Ancona (Gideonâs Daughter), and Alec Newman (Frank Herbertâs Dune). Set against the backdrop of gorgeous Scottish scenery, Hope Springs is escapist, entertaining fun.Hope Springs is a bit like Sex and the City--if Carrie & Co. had served time for fraud, assault, and arson! Ellie (Alex Kingston, ER), Shoo (Christine Bottomley, The Street), Hannah (Sian Reeves, Emmerdale Farm), and Josie (Vinette Robinson, Waterloo Road) are fresh out of prison, but they pull off a perfect scam on Ellie's weaselly husband--netting them a big chunk of money and putting him in jail. Then their plan to skip off to Barbados falls apart and they're forced to take a detour to Scotland, where they try to keep a low profile operating a run-down hotel. Unfortunately for them, they've landed in a murder mystery--and the hotel is at the! heart of it. Even worse, the imprisoned husband's right-hand ! man is h unting them down, and he doesn't care who gets hurt (or killed) along the way.
Hope Springs balances drama and whimsical comedy with easy skill. Kingston drives the show with her mix of iron will, confident sexiness, and flashes of vulnerability, but the entire cast is solid, including Annette Crosbie (One Foot in the Grave) as the previous owner of the hotel who's not as dotty as she seems. Particularly good is Bottomley; her character Shoo is a mess--needy, reckless, prone to petty tantrums--but in Bottomley's hands she's deeply sympathetic, and exemplifies the damaged lives these women have lived. The show's overarching theme is how these former criminals, who've learned to look out for themselves at all costs, discover the value of community. Thanks to the fine cast and strong writing, this opening up is both comic and touching. Hope Springs is an excellent show that deserves to find a wider audience. --Bret FetzerThe Celtic queen wh! o shook the Roman Empire. Wife of a king. Mother of two daughters. Leader of her tribe in first century Briton. Boudica (Alex Kingston, Moll Flanders and ER) is one of historyâs first and fiercest women warriors.
Sickened by ceaseless war, the king of the Iceni accepts a treaty with the Romans in exchange for his tribeâs continued independence. But oppressively high taxes impoverish the tribe and soon the Romans want something more â" slaves. Refusing to submit, the Romans, led by the greedy and psychotic Emperor Nero, move to crush the Iceni and control their lands. When the king dies mysteriously, his wife, Boudica, is left alone to face the rapacious Romans and save her people.
Drawing on the strength of her warriors, mystical druidic powers, and her own pain, Boudica unites the historically fractious tribes of Briton to unleash a stunning onslaught on the Roman colonial camps. The ferocity of Boudicaâs attacks will shake the foundations of the Roman emp! ire and make her a legend.
Taken from the pages of Roman h! istory b ooks, the spine-tingling tale of the fearsome Queen Boudica, who dared to take on the most powerful army on earth, bursts into life as a story of love, treachery, and unquenchable thirst for revenge.

Screen format: Letterboxed. The most resourceful heroine in literature comes to the screen in a gritty, sexually charged adaptation of the Daniel Defoe classic. Alex Kingston plays notorious Moll, a woman struggling to make her way in a rough, randy era. Her story involves five husbands, numerous lovers, shocking family secrets and travels to bustling London and the New World's Virginia. Moll's dangerous misdeeds stretch from sexual adventures to criminal acts, leaving her with a ! price on her head. And though her mind tells her to forsake ne'er-do-well beau Jemmy (Daniel Craig), her heart cannot be changed by anything--not even the gallows. An outlaw of her time... and one of the most remarkable tales of all time: Moll FlandersThis energetic, sardonic, and richly funny adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel is completely unlike what you might expect from genteel Masterpiece Theatre. The heroine, Moll Flanders (Alex Kingston), after being born in prison, wends her way through the top and bottom of 18th-century English society, has five husbands (including a roguish highwayman who becomes the love of her life), many lovers (male and female), travels to America and back again, and in general discovers all that is cruel and sweet in life. Kingston tears into her role with gleeful amorality and delicious charm, often turning to the camera with a seductive smile to ask, "What would you do?" This British miniseries is brilliantly writte! n, skillfully directed, and superbly acted all around (with pa! rticular ly delightful performances by Diana Rigg and Daniel Craig)--in short, among the best of its kind; both a cunning examination of social morés and a hugely entertaining story. Not to be missed. --Bret FetzerFORTUNES AND MISFORTUNES OF MOLL FLAN - DVD MovieThis energetic, sardonic, and richly funny adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel is completely unlike what you might expect from genteel Masterpiece Theatre.
